Fighting Black Birth Mortality Rates One Birth at a Time
What is a Doula?
While on my journey to becoming a doula no one really knew what it was. I'd be like "yea I'm becoming a doula" and many folks would ask "umm isn't that like a midwife" or "what is that? It sounds funny." Well a doula is indeed a birth worker like a midwife but the primary focus of a doula is to provide physical, mental and emotional support to the mother and birth partner through various stages of birth. Though not medically trained a doula is trained to educate new mothers on options throughout their pregnancy, provide emotional and physical support and ensure a safe and healthy, pregnancy and delivery. A doula is there to make sure that you feel like your birth is as easy as possible and is something worth remembering. A doula is there to help you advocate for the things you want from your birth and there to do it for you when you are unable to. Doulas are the life line between you, your baby and the medical professionals. Doulas are there to make sure you are and feel heard every step of the way!
